10 DESIGN007 MAGAZINE I JULY 2020 In another life, I was a newspaper reporter. I worked in a newsroom, bathed in the bright green light from my trusty Fellowes CRT. News- rooms are noisy. This was before cellphones, so if I had to make an important call to a judge or police chief, I'd hunt for an unoccupied edi- tor's office. When I first got into the world of PCBs and EDA tools, I worked in a cubicle. Eventually, I wound up in my own office, and I thought that was about as good as it could get. Then, I started working remotely, and I'm addicted to it. Now that I've been working from home for 13 years, I can't imagine ever working in an office again. But not everyone likes to work from home, as some of you told us in a recent survey. Some who have been forced to work from home by COVID-19 can't wait to get back into the office. They like the feeling of leaving their problems in the office each day. They miss the casual conversations in the break room or being able to read a colleague's expression in a face-to-face meeting instead of a quirky video conference. I was surprised that so few of you were work- ing remotely before the COVID-19 outbreak. As you can see in Table 1, nearly two-thirds of PCB designers and design engineers who responded said they had just recently begun working from home. The Shaughnessy Report by Andy Shaughnessy, I-CONNECT007 Designing a New Work Environment Table 1: Less than one-third of survey respondents were working remotely before COVID-19 hit.
