92 DESIGN007 MAGAZINE I OCTOBER 2022 Shaughnessy: John, what do you think? Voultos: I'm going to build off what Mike and Tom said. I do believe it's strongly a b o u t w o r k i n g together and lever- aging your suppliers. They're developing some new technolo- gies that are usually ahead of the curve and you should lever- age them as best you can. But at the same time, there's oppor- tunity. I know Butler and Sheldahl work together and lever- age the capabilities for each other. It's not really the Wild West. at, to me, means being at the very beginning. is industry has existed for years in the shadows. at's probably a good way to say it. I really do believe this is the technology. People are looking at their product and trying to evolve it. We use the term "from ordinary to extraor- dinary." We're taking something rather flat and ordi- nary, and then making something extraor- dinary by bending, curving, and putting it in places where electronics haven't existed before. at's a key element. It's in the shad- ows, but as you're seeing more of these prod- ucts come out, you will see more of these elec- tronics become very much like from the circuit board industry stance. at's my two cents. I enjoy working with these three gentlemen, but I miss speaking to Tom the most, even though he's technically a competitor. Bianchi: We need to get another in-person con- ference. Voultos: I know we do. I need to at least come visit you. Shaughnessy: Kevin, any final words? Miller: I haven't been in this segment as long as John, Mike, and Tom, but I have seen it evolve over the past seven years that I've been involved. ere are a lot of new technologies coming out, whether it's IME or wearables, some of these resistor-type i n k s . T h e r e's d e f i - nitely a lot of devel- opment work hap - pening from the sup- pliers to bring on new technologies. We truly believe there will be a crossover between the two industries and there will be companies that will be doing both. e sad part is that we had a yearly trade show called IDTechEx, which was canceled because of COVID, so there's not a yearly get- together like we have in the printed circuit board business, which is IPC APEX EXPO. Maybe the guys in printed electronics or the manager of IDTechEx could develop a confer- ence that's part of APEX EXPO, because there are a lot of similarities. A lot of it has to do with circuitry and assembly as well. Shaughnessy: Good, thank you for doing this. Voultos: ank you, Andy. Good to talk with you guys again. Let's meet up in person soon. Bianchi: Definitely. is has been great. DESIGN007 Tom Bianchi
