84 DESIGN007 MAGAZINE I MARCH 2023 Tribal Knowledge: A Personal Perspective With the benefit of more than half a century of experience in the printed circuit and elec- tronics interconnection industry, I now enjoy a perspective that is not available to those just entering. I harken to a comment made by leg- endary Swedish film director, Ingmar Berg- man, "Old age (growing old) is like climbing a mountain. You climb from ledge to ledge. e higher you get, the more tired and breath- less you become, but your views become more extensive." at perspective is truly a gi, regardless of what one does in life. It certainly has resonated with me (even before I arrived here.) e young oen balk at the knowledge of the "old folks" as foolish and old fashioned. But a couple of timeless Mark Twain quotes come to mind at such times: "When I was 17, my father was so stupid, I didn't want to be seen with him in public. When I was 24, I was amazed at how much the old man had learned in just seven years." Equally witty and more to the point when it comes to manufacturing: "It ain't what you don't know that gets you into trouble, it's what you know for sure that just ain't so." I know these things too well because I was young once. A final timeless aphorism: "A little knowledge is a dangerous thing." Enough of my referencing backwoods wis- dom. I trust you get the idea.
