September 2015 • SMT Magazine 61 way from prototype to series production. A lab- oratory differs from industrial application. Las Marias: Could you enlighten us on some of the latest developments in aoi technology aimed at addressing the high-reliability requirements of automotive electronics? Kokott: The use of 3D measurement in elec- tronics manufacturing has brought a signifi- cant development of AOI systems. AOI sup- pliers have to develop the application pos- sibilities of the 3D measurement systems, starting from simple component recognition to coplanarity measurement and determina- tion of solder volumes. Increasing the speed of inspection and higher detail recognition of smallest errors will constantly be a challenge. Apart from the integration of 3D measure- ment methods, in the foreseeable future no revolutionary advancements in AOI technol- ogy are to be expected. Las Marias: Jens, thank you for your time. Kokott: Thank you, Stephen. smt HOW AutOmOtIve eLeCtrONICs Are DrIvING AOI DeveLOpmeNts continues FeAture interview figure 2: System layout of an integrated power module (image provided by indium corporation).
