Since one of HDI's main benefits is lower over- all cost, there may be a disconnect somewhere along the line. I've heard horror stories of companies using HDI when it's not neces- sary, and that's a reci- pe for disaster. Almost every re- spondent said they use FR-4 or a variation of FR-4 for HDI build-up. And almost everyone doing HDI said they receive some sort of training, whether in-house, third- party events, or conferences. Many have also read books such as Happy's HDI Handbook, and a few said they relied on their fabricators' knowledge of HDI processes. HDI is making a comeback in the States, with more and more fabricators here offering HDI services. Can the U.S. ever become the HDI center of the world? If so, we'd like to help make that happen! This month, we have a raft of feature articles on HDI design, starting with a rousing ex- perts' discussion with Steve Bird of Finisar, Tony Tor- res of APCT, and MC As- sembly's Steve Jervey, Mike Smyth and Paul Petty. Then, San Di- ego PCB founder Mike Creeden shares his views on what it takes to design and manu - facture a cutting-edge HDI board today. Craig Armenti of Mentor dis- cusses the impact of HDI on power distribution and power integrity . Then we have an article by NCAB COO Jim Nut - tall, who explains the state of HDI as he sees it, and the smart decisions that have to be made, from the design stage through vol- ume production. We also have an article by Bruce Wu of EDADOC, the largest design bureau in China, on the HDI trends he's seeing in the domestic China market, as well as around the globe. We round things out with Vern Solberg, who has a great column on design strategies specifically for HDI boards. As usual, we also have columns by our regular contributors Barry Olney, Tim Haag, and Jade Bridges. I'm getting ready to head off to productron- ica, in Munich.
