50 PCB007 MAGAZINE I AUGUST 2020 Leadership is the foundation of a success- ful business, but how do you define it? Lead- ership has various definitions, depending on where you are in the world. The range of lead- ership attributes varies from "a practical skill encompassing the ability of an individual or organization to lead or guide other individu- als, teams, or entire organizations" to "a pro- cess of social influence in which a person can enlist the aid and support of others in the ac- complishment of a common task" [1] . Leadership Styles What styles of leadership are there, and what type do you use? Leadership styles are often attributed to a situation or circumstance a company is encompassed in. Here are five key leadership styles [2] : 1. Autocratic: All decision-making powers are centralized in the leader. 2. Democratic: The leader shares the deci- sion-making abilities with group members. Leadership Styles for Success 3. Laissez-faire: Decision-making passed on to subordinates with the right and power to make decisions to establish goals and work out the problems or hurdles. 4. Task-oriented: Are generally more concerned with producing a step-by-step solution for a given problem or goal, strict- ly making sure these deadlines are met, and results and target outcomes are reached. 5. Parental: The structure of the team is organized hierarchically, where the leader is viewed above the followers. The Art and Science of Leadership The definition of leadership and leadership styles depends on where and when you were raised, your education, and the financial, tech- nological, and cultural situation where one is executing leadership. To draw a parallel be- tween leadership and creating and maintain- ing a successful business, both have an ele- ment of art and science to them.
