16 SMT007 MAGAZINE I JANUARY 2022 Johnson: Koh Young certainly has a position on the manufacturing floor from which to provide quite a bit of data and information into the pro- cess, both as a feedback loop and as a feed for- ward loop. Scutchfield: at's correct. Johnson: How does Koh Young approach im- plementing these sorts of AI or analysis com- ponents into the products for customers? Scutchfield: I think the answer starts with un- derstanding that our dataset is different. is might be a long way to get you to your answer, but I'll try to keep it short. We came out of the 3D world from the inception and did not start with all the 2D technology that all our com- petitors did, as that's all that existed when Koh Young introduced the first 3D measurement- based plug-and-play system in 2010 and like- wise with the SPI tool roughly eight years pri- or. It's with the right kind of dataset, which I quantify as "true 3D," the right kind, paramet- ric, objective, profilometric measurement- based data that's gotten the right way, with the right tools and subsystems; what's under the hood really does matter when it comes to re- liability and accuracy. And then finally getting all of that in the right amount to be useful from a statistically relevant perspective. is now gets into the area of big data, where we are acquiring 32 three- dimensional images per FOV, for every field of view we inspect in order to ren- der our 3D model from which our mea- surement-based results are provided. at's really where it starts. Now with that, we can begin to assess how that superior dataset can be applied with the use of, for instance, artificial in- telligence, to automate the AOI pro- graming process much more substan- tially where we can now cut the time it takes for a program to be regenerat- ed, replacing what was done manually at one time, with automation and artificial in- telligence, by roughly 70%. at's significant. Again, it's applying the dataset to a scenario that it fits. It's an incremental, evolving process. As our customers are ready for more, we provide more. ere's some that say, "Give it all to me at once," and there's others who say, "Let's do this in smaller pieces." Fortunately, they all un- derstand on the front end what the end game is. en, it's just up to us to work with them to create the best path to get there. Johnson: I'm sure that this is not just a plug- and-play process in a customer environment on the manufacturing floor. Setting up is more than just putting the equipment in and turning it on; it must connect into a data flow, gather- ing the data, and working to make it available for analysis. I would have to think that's com- plex. How does Koh Young help customers with that part of the process? Scutchfield: I think we have been very success- ful at making our solutions as plug-and-play as possible. Again, that's primarily specific to our tools, our soware, and our machines up and down the line. So now, how do we take it to the next level? I have a customer that loves everything we're showing and providing with our KSMART
