14 SMT007 MAGAZINE I JUNE 2023 into some sort of communication system, and then actually communicating it up and down the supply chain. Johnson: Kelly, what are the long-term implications? More now than ever, electronics manufac- turing companies recognize obligations to enable sustainability through electrified solu- tions and obligations to be more transparent in their own practices. e risks of not manag- ing sustainability can be severe and are likely now more than ever due to evolving regula- tory obligations and expectations for transpar- ency. Requests and requirements are increas- ing, as is the amount of data regarding a com- pany's environmental, social, and corporate governance aspects and impacts. Information is needed by a diverse and numerous set of stakeholders including customers, investors, regulators and policymakers, employees, sup- pliers, and the communities in which compa- nies operate. Companies are setting sustain- ability targets and they are talking about these targets, measuring themselves against their ability to achieve these targets, and looking at their customers and suppliers to ensure they are doing the same. IPC is building a community of sustainabil- ity for electronics expertise. We are expanding existing standards and creating new ones with education and advocacy to be more inclusive of relevant sustainability topics. Sustainability for electronics will not warrant one-size-fits- all solutions.
