FEBRUARY 2025 I DESIGN007 MAGAZINE 25 • Radio frequency (RF) design: With the rise of wireless technolo- gies, RF skills are in high demand. • Electromagnetic compatibility (EMC): As a multitude of elec- tronic devices proliferate in our world, a critical skills is the ability to ensure they don't interfere with one another and successfully oper- ate as intended. • Embracing AI in EDA tools: e next generation of designers will increasingly rely on AI-driven tools in electronics design automation. Understanding how to leverage AI to handle all the mundane, boring tasks as well as simulation, optimization, and error detection will be a significant advantage, increasing their potential for higher effi- ciency design and innovation. • Collaboration and communication: In today's technology-rich world, design is rarely a solo endeavor. So skills such as communication, teamwork, and cross- disciplinary collaboration and integration are just as critical as technical expertise. Encouraging team-building and cohesive- ness skills through participation in group projects, industry competitions, and social team-building activities can help develop these skills. • Sustainability and ethics: With the growing focus on environmental impacts and ethical design practices, young PCB designers should be educated on sustain- able materials, energy-efficient designs, and the social implications of their work. Bridging the Gap Finding and training the next generation of PCB designers requires a holistic approach that combines education, mentorship, and technology. Early outreach can spark interest, while apprenticeships and industry programs ensure practical experience. Meanwhile, a well-rounded curriculum that combines tech- nical mastery with AI proficiency, collabora- tion, and ethical awareness will prepare young PCB designers to meet the challenges of the future. By investing in these strategies, we can build a robust and diverse talent pipeline that not only meets current demands but also pushes the boundaries of what's possible. As technology advances, the role of PCB designers will evolve, transforming indus- tries and unlocking new opportunities. e demand for the new generation of PCB designers will continue to remain high. While trends like AI, remote work, and interdisci- plinar y expertise will shape the future, what endures are the timeless pillars of process, creativity, problem-solving, collaboration, and innovation. By embracing challenges and seizing opportunities, future PCB designers will not only adapt but excel in a world brim- ming with possibilities. DESIGN007 References 1. "The US Needs More Engineers.
