business case for sustainability and workforce
challenge.
The technical focus areas currently under
consideration as the next NNMIs are: flex-
ible hybrid electronics, photonics, engineered
nanomaterials, fiber textiles, electronic packag-
ing and reliability, and aerospace composites.
For electronics professionals, several of the
NNMIs under consideration are clearly in our
industry's wheelhouse, and you are encouraged
to get active in the process. See my July 2014
summary of the IPC Executive Committee's
meetings on Capitol Hill in the July 2014 issue
of The PCB Magazine: IMPACT 2014: IPC on
Capitol Hill—Leadership in Promoting a Strong
Manufacturing Economy, and to learn more
about the sustained IPC effort that has resulted
in the legislation referenced earlier and how to
become involved in future efforts.
In my opinion, we are stronger for all that
we have survived as an industry together, and
the tide has now turned as PCBs that are de-
signed specifically for defense systems must now
be manufactured in the United States and are
under full ITAR and USML controls. The House
and the Senate recognize the value of creating
advanced manufacturing centers in the United
States that are private/public/academia partner-
ships to drive innovation, and U.S.-based elec-
tronics OEMs are increasingly reshoring manu-
facturing opportunities to the U.S.
Enjoy the ride up, up and away; it has been
a long time coming.
