44 I-CONNECT007 I REAL TIME WITH... IPC APEX EXPO 2019 SHOW & TELL MAGAZINE would never usually think about when you're just a student doing a regular program of some sort such as football or some other athletic pro- gram. Matties: How successful have you been in find- ing sponsors? McGalliard: We have been pretty successful. Our two biggest sponsors this year are Hunter Industries and the Nordson Corporation. We also have grants from Qualcomm, Superior Case Coding Inc., and a smaller company where one of the parents of a former team member works called Matter. Matties: As you move through school and start your senior year next year, what's next for you? McGalliard: FIRST gives you a lot of huge oppor- tunities. They have many scholarships avail- able for college-bound FIRST alumni. If you were an alumnus of FIRST, you can apply for different types of scholarships that will range from a few hundred dollars to up to many hun- dreds of thousands of dollars. It just depends on what you qualify for and what you have done as far as FIRST goes. The more invested you are in FIRST, the more opportunities you will have. Matties: You've taken on leadership roles in your activities. What do you think it takes to be a great leader? McGalliard: The most impor- tant thing leadership involv- es is communication. I'm an Eagle Scout, and have taken leadership courses and participated in National Youth Leadership Training through the Boy Scouts of America. The training helps to bring people through a certain stage of development that you don't really get through many programs. Another important thing that I was taught during that time was to listen to those that you are leading. Leadership can be about talking a lot of the times, but people for- get to listen to what your people that you are managing have to say. A good leader listens, maintains their composure, and even when something goes wrong, they know how to be a good friend. Matties: Who inspires you? McGalliard: My dad definitely inspires me. He's a nurse, but also spent 24 years in the military in both the army and navy. He is an inspiration to me because he goes out every day to do his best to provide for my family and make a dif- ference in the world. I also think that my teach- ers, especially my mentor for robotics, are very big influences for me. My mentor has shown me a lot of guidance and given me direction on what I should do with my life. Matties: You're here at the IPC APEX EXPO 2019 with the STEM Student Outreach pro- Marcos being interviewed by Jocelynn Beltran, a journalism student from Mission Hills High School, for Real Time with...
