Some companies are supplying the 01005 outline capacitor with a thickness no greater than 0.20 mm (the 01005 resistor is only 0.13 mm). Meanwhile, capacitors fur- nished in the 008004 outline are a mere 0.125 mm in thickness, but as the dielectric volume decreases, the value range also becomes lim- ited. Table 3 details capacitor outline varia- smaller than the 0201 chip-resistor element. However, when expanding current capacity, a more substantial outline component with a higher watt rating will be required. The height of the component will also increase. To accom- modate the higher component profile, it will be necessary to provide additional clearance (cav- ity) in the PCB layer structure (Figure 2). 1 For components with a higher profile, the PCB fabricator will need to delete portions of the prepreg and copper foil material selectively.
