IPC COMMUNITY 85 SPRING 2023 In our previous article, "Sustainability: IPC Leading the Way," we asked, "Which sustainability issues are most likely to impact the operating performance of elec- tronics companies?" While there are a mul- titude of sustainability topics, not all are material or relevant to electronics manu- facturing. The answer, though, can enable companies to manage resources that help them meet regulatory obligations and to identify more sustainable business and manufacturing practices with the most beneficial outcomes for the resources invested. Here's how we have addressed this question and looked for an answer: IPC completed an exploratory materiality assessment in Q4 2022 t o e v a l u a t e t h e r e p o r t i n g a n d disclosure drivers causing industry t o r e p o r t a n d d i s c l o s e c o m p a n y - specific data and information on various sustainability topics and t a r g e t s , a n d t h e m a t e r i a l t h e y h a v e p r i o r i t i z e d . The purpose of the exploratory study was to provide a foundation for future indus- try-specific, sustainability-related stud- ies. However, we were surprised by how useful the results of the study were. By Kelly Scanlon, IPC Lead Sustainability Strategist What Does Sustainability Mean for Electronics Manufacturers? IPC COMMUNITY 85 SPRING 2023 The exploratory study included the following steps: 1. Identify sustainability reports from electronics manufacturing companies. 3. Report to ensure comparability across companies and produce meaningful results. 2. Analyze the results to support consistent review and compilation of data on several parameters.
