72 SMT007 MAGAZINE I NOVEMBER 2024 on the CBRS LTE network. One-on-one and PTT group communication were demonstrated for voice-enabled devices connected to the private network. Since the PTT service was cloud-hosted, off- site smartphones with the PTT app could communicate with the radios and devices within range of the private cellular network. is allowed delivery truck drivers who were offsite to communicate with associates on the customer's premises. • Inventory management. CBRS Band 48 enabled bar code scanning devices were directly connected to the network. Scanned bar code information was directly sent to the offsite enterprise ERP for real time inventory tracking. e customer has plans to add RFID readers which will also be connected to the private network. • Mobile point of sale. Using CBRS LTE- to-ethernet routers, point-of-sale cash reg- isters were connected to the network. With this capability the business could conduct a sales transaction anywhere on property and not just at the cash registers inside the showroom. • Theft prevention. While the uplink band- width for 4G LTE is somewhat limited (depending on network config) compared to a 5G network, a few smart cameras with built in artificial intelligence (AI) could be connected to the network to demonstrate the ability to conduct video surveillance of the property and the prevention. With additional radios for uplink bandwidth or using 5G technology, additional cameras can be implemented on the network. • ERP integration. Complete integration of the network with the business's cloud- hosted ERP was demonstrated for end-to- end data transfer from the network edge to the ERP core, thus ensuring real-time asset visibility and operational efficiency. Discussion and Conclusion While Industry 4.0 is generally used as an umbrella term for a variety of information- driven transformation of manufacturing and other industrial sectors, this paper demon- strates that the same information-driven trans- formation is equally applicable across non- manufacturing industry verticals. Digital trans- formation, in all cases, requires a versatile underlying network to capture, transport, ana- lyze, and act on the data. is article demonstrates that private cel- lular 4G LTE and 5G are versatile networks that can support broadband, narrowband, and IoT use cases that are common across indus- try verticals. e networks deliver the con- trol, predictability, and security of wired con- nectivity with the mobility, scalability, and ease of implementation of wireless. e regu- latory changes implemented by the FCC that have made spectrum both affordable and freely available combined with cloud hosting technology advances have made such private networks affordable for large and small busi- nesses alike. Unlike with carrier networks, with private cellular networks proprietary enterprise data stays securely behind enter- prise firewalls.
