FEBRUARY 2025 I DESIGN007 MAGAZINE 67 For the latest news and information, visit PCBDesign007.com IPC Announces New Training Course: PCB Design for Manufacturability DesignCon may be turning 30 this year, but the Silicon Valley staple doesn't look a day over 25. Attendees turned out for this celebratory bash, many of them reminiscing about their first DesignCon event 20 or 30 years ago. DesignCon 2025: Looking Great at 30 Thomas Romont is CEO of WorldWide Electronic Circuits in Nantes, France, and chair of the IPC Designers Council France. He gave a presentation at electronica titled "Challenges for the Future From a PCB/PCBA Designer Perspective." We asked Thomas to share his thoughts about the class, why this topic is so important, and what he hoped attendees would take away from his class. Focus on Electronica: Future Challenges From a Designer's Viewpoint As a baby boomer, I'm amazed by technological advance- ments. I am a huge science fiction fan, and what was once found only in books, TV shows, and movies is now reality. Take the 1966 classic movie "Fantastic Journey," about a team of scientists miniaturized and injected into the body of a dying diplomat. Their mission was to navigate through his bloodstream, to reach his brain, and destroy a blood clot threatening his life. As they journeyed through arteries, veins, and organs, they had to complete the mission before time ran out. Elementary Mr. Watson: The Road Ahead— Advances in PCB Design Technology In the previous episode of I-Connect007's On the Line with… podcast, we discussed the solder mask and legend process, one of the final steps in the PCB manufacturing process. The board is nearly complete. We just need to wrap up production by applying a surface finish to protect the copper from oxidation and facilitate soldering components onto the board. Connect the Dots: Designing for Reality— Surface Finish This three-week online program, taught by an industry expert with over 40 years of experience, is designed to equip PCB designers with the knowledge and skills to reduce or eliminate design, documentation, and capability issues that often arise during PCB fabrication.
