Ask a veteran PCB professional how they know a process is beginning to drift and the answer may be, "You can just tell." What sounds like intuition can represent 30 years of accumulated pattern recognition. This presents an important opportunity to pass it on that expertise to the next generation. AI and digital knowledge systems can provide the tools to capture that knowledge as employees document troubleshooting methods, unusual failure modes, process relationships, lessons learned, customer- specific challenges, and other insights that rarely appear in an SOP. AI and digital systems can then help organize and retrieve that knowledge. Empowering People to Improve the Process The person closest to the process often sees op- portunities for improvement first, from technicians who notice unnecessary movement and recognize recurring alarms to maintenance personnel who see components that repeatedly require attention. These observations represent an enormous continuous-improvement resource. Technology gives us more data, and people give that informa- tion context, ask questions, identify opportunities, and turn what they learn into action. Creating an environment where employees are encouraged to identify problems, question ineffi- cient practices, recommend changes, and act when something requires attention strengthens the entire manufacturing system. It is, in essence, the Toyota way—the company that first embraced Edward Deming's principals and showed the world how to go about making continuous improvement part of one's manufacturing culture. The more sophisti- cated the factory and products being built become, the more valuable that engagement. What This Looks Like at GreenSource At GreenSource Fabrication, we have seen this evo- lution firsthand. Building the Human-centered PCB Factory The next generation of PCB factories will include more automation, AI, robotics, machine vision, pre- dictive analytics, digital traceability, and intercon- nected manufacturing systems and become even more important as customer expectations rise and deliverables become more complex. Building the factory of the future means investing in both technology and people. Every major auto- mation investment creates an opportunity to ask what new skills our people can develop. AI implementation creates opportunities to teach employees how to understand and apply the insights these systems produce. More manufac- turing data creates opportunities to strengthen employees' ability to interpret it. And critically important, decades of experience across the work- force create opportunities to capture and transfer knowledge to the next generation.
