SHOW & TELL MAGAZINE 2018 I I-CONNECT007 41 Goldman: Very interesting. What advice do you have for others in, regarding involvement in committees and standards development at IPC? Woody: I would definitely encourage involve- ment. You don't have the right to complain if you're not going to come help be a part of the solution. If you want to see change, it just makes sense to be involved. If you use the standards in your day-to-day life, you want to be a part of it. Goldman: What were your thoughts when you got the phone call from John Mitchell, telling you about the award? Woody: I was kind of surprised since I'd been retired for three years [laughs]. Is this really John Mitchell? Of course, John and I have been work- ing together ever since he took over. The PERM came from a different organization. They used to belong to AIA, and I transferred them into the IPC. I transitioned the whole group over into the IPC as a council, so that was painstaking, prob - ably about a year of my life working very closely with John. I was surprised. Of course, I was very flattered that people still care. Goldman: It's a ploy to keep you involved, you know that. [Laughs] Woody: I know, I see right through it, but I still appreciate it. Goldman: It's quite an honor. Do you feel an increased commitment since you're getting the award? Woody: Of course you do. But I would say it's more of a continuing commitment because I had no plans to quit. Goldman: Right, you've got to see it through and we just reach one plateau and there's the next one. Woody: Another plateau, but there's never an end. Endless revisions, and we just keep going. Goldman: I understand that, because just look at how fast things are moving forward in our industry. You've got to be revising almost imme- diately. Woody: And it's accelerating. It's getting so much faster that it's almost impossible, especially in a lead-free world. About the time you're ready to issue a document, considering the length of time it takes to do it, it's time to start over. Goldman: Oh yes. And that's always the frustra- tion, to get them done faster, but there's a limit to how fast you can do it. Woody: That usually depends on committee size. The bigger the committee, the longer it takes [laughs]. Try to get 10 people to agree on some- thing and then try to get 200 to agree on some- thing. Goldman: So true. Well, thanks Linda, I look for- ward to meeting you at IPC APEX EXPO and congratulations again. Woody: Thanks. I'm honored to get the award. I really appreciate it. S&T
