76 SMT007 MAGAZINE I DECEMBER 2022 Editor's note: Indium Corporation's Ron Lasky continues this series of columns about Maggie Benson, a fictional character, to demonstrate continuous improvement and education in SMT assembly. Let's look in on Andy Connors and Sue March as they continue their flight to Mexico to inspect Castellanos Electronics, a factory that Maggie and John are interested in buying. Andy was tickled to finally discover a math problem that he knew how to solve but Sue didn't. "So, to solve for 7 1000 you have to use loga- rithms," Andy said. "If you take the log to the base 10 of 7 you get 0.84509804. So that means that 7 is equal to 10 0.84509804 ." Charting the Path to Improvement But Sue, realizing the solution, got so excited that she interrupted Andy before he could finish. "I see, you take 7 expressed as a power of 10, so 7 1000 = (10 0.84509804 ) 1000 = 10 845.09804 = (10 .0.09804 ) *10 845 ," Sue said, getting out her calculator and determining that 10 .0.09804 was 1.2533. "e answer is 1.2533x10 845 ." Andy just had to chuckle; it was hard to top Sue. eir flight landed on time, and aer a short cab ride, they arrived at the factory. e fac- tory owner, José Castellanos, gave them a brief tour before suggesting that they all go to din- ner.
