IPC COMMUNITY 53 FALL 2023 It's no secret that times have changed when it comes to hiring and retaining our workforce. It's an ongoing challenge for our industry that requires uncon- ventional thinking, casting a wider net, and addressing the real issues at hand. IPC President and CEO John W. Mitch- ell has written a new book titled Fire Your Hiring Habits. It addresses these challenges and offers real solu- tions. "This book is about two big pieces that align strongly with IPC's mission in workforce devel- opment: f inding a n d ke e p i n g t h e right people," John says. "It is written in an approachable, fun way for those who are trying to hire and retain talent; it's really meant for them." Keeping the right people means first f i n d i n g t h e r i g h t p e o p l e , a n d Jo h n spends the most amount of time on this topic. "It's about the kind of organiza- tion you are—that's your culture," he says. "It's not something you buy off the shelf or create by putting up a few post- ers. It's about who you are, what you do, and how you treat your team." John addresses the unique needs of the new workforce, and how that plays into a culture that has shifted over the past few decades. He emphasizes that a corporate culture m u s t a l i g n w i t h t h e p r i o r i t i e s o f individuals as they come along. "You need to embrace t h a t p e o p l e a r e different; in many ways, that's a ben- efit. Having a diverse group helps you come up with better solutions. Don't look at diversity as a challenge."
