72 PCB007 MAGAZINE I NOVEMBER 2024 • BET is not comparable across busi- nesses: Breakeven times can vary greatly from business to business due to project and product life cycles, making it inap- propriate to compare BETs from different businesses. Businesses are not encouraged to compare their BETs to one another, but to compare their own past, present, and future BETs and to establish BET goals for the future. • BET can predict and measure invest- ment and profit for complex busi- nesses: It can be very difficult to deter- mine the associated BET (e.g., determin- ing the BET of an operating system used for many different products). BET's easi- est application is to product developments whose financial aspects can be reasonably predicted and actuals determined. Users must have a reasonably good ability to pre- dict project investments, costs, and sales of both new and affected products. Addi- tionally, users must have the ability to gather project-related actual investments and profits. is is why cross-group proj- ect BETs are difficult to calculate. Recom- mendations for the use of BET can be seen in Figure 2. It can be beneficial to calculate a project's BET even if it is difficult to accurately predict all project parameters. By comparing actual data to the corresponding predictions, param- eters needing improved prediction accuracy can be identified. Using actual data from past and current projects as estimates improves predictions for future projects. PCB007 Table 1: BET elements Each chapter of 24 Essential Skills for Engineers is devoted to a skill that engineers do not typically learn in college, such as problem solving, design of experiments, product and process life cycles, Lean manufactur- ing, and predictive engineering. You won't find all this information in one publication anywhere else. Happy Holden has done all the hard work for you. All you have to do is read this book and take notes.
