48 SMT007 MAGAZINE I MAY 2021 Feature Article by Kelly Scanlon IPC Did you know that IPC members have sev- eral opportunities to learn about and get involved in policy debates about environment, health, and safety (EHS) issues? As a member-driven organization, IPC's Gov- ernment Relations (GR) team relies on the input of experts from member companies to ensure IPC's advocacy activities reflect the industry's priorities. For example, IPC's environmental policy priorities for 2021 were determined with input from our recently formed Environment and Health Strategic Management Team (ENV SMT), as well as from consultation with IPC's North American and European Government Relations committees. e experts who volun- teer their time to participate in these committees recognize the importance of engaging with pol- icymakers to educate them about the electron- ics industry and to advocate for policies that further the industry's competitive excellence and protect human health and the environ- ment. At the start of 2021, the ENV SMT was formed to shape the scope of IPC's environ- ment and health advocacy efforts around the policy priorities, and cra position papers and stakeholder comments. e ENV SMT com- prises just over a dozen electronics industry professionals with regulatory expertise in pub- lic health policies and technical expertise in areas such as environmental and occupational health, product stewardship, and quality assur- ance. ENV SMT members represent the entire electronics manufacturing supply chain, with representatives from OEMs, EMS providers, PCB manufacturers, and suppliers of chemi- cals and components. IPC also convenes an EHS Committee, a larger forum of diverse professionals with EHS responsibilities. Members have regular oppor- tunities to hear from IPC about the policies we're monitoring and engaging on and from peers about their own challenges or best prac- tices on EHS-related issues. Currently, IPC's environmental policy prior- ities include engagement on the: • EU's RoHS (Restriction of Hazardous Substances) directive and REACH (Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals) regulation Get Involved with IPC's EHS-Related Committees
