26 DESIGN007 MAGAZINE I FEBRUARY 2024 Feature Article by Stephen V. Chavez SIEMENS ELECTRONIC DESIGN AUTOMATION Printed circuit boards (PCBs) are the back- bone of electronic devices, facilitating the seamless flow of electrical signals and support- ing the functionality of various components. In recent years, the evolution of PCB design has witnessed a significant transformation with the integration of embedded components. is innovative approach not only enhances the overall performance of electronic devices, it brings forth a range of advantages regarding space efficiency, reliability, and manufacturing processes. Embedded components refer to electronic elements that are directly integrated into the PCB itself rather than being mounted on the surface. Traditional PCB designs involve Unleashing the Power of Embedded Components placing components on the surface, but the embedded approach goes a step further by incorporating elements like resistors, capaci- tors, and even active components within the layers of the PCB. is integration eliminates the need for additional space on the surface, and provides a compact solution for modern electronic devices. Unlike a standard PCB design, embedding components add complexity to PCB layout, requiring careful planning to maintain sig- nal integrity as they may affect signal paths, thus requiring analysis and mitigation to pre- serve electrical performance. is complex- ity increases due to the component synthesis required to create embedded passive geome- Figure 1: Embedded passive components reduce size and space.
