OCTOBER 2025 I DESIGN007 MAGAZINE 63 detection and faster repairs, provides accurate meter readings without the need for estimates, and helps customers make informed decisions about their water use. For these demanding applications, polyurethane- based potting offers distinct advantages over other encapsulation materials. Its excellent adhesion to a wide range of substrates ensures a reliable seal that remains intact even in high-moisture environments. Compared to silicones, which can allow water vapor to permeate, polyurethanes exhibit much lower vapor transmission rates while maintaining flexibil- ity. This combination enables them to absorb ther- mal and mechanical stress without cracking solder joints or detaching components. In addition, poly- urethane formulations can be tailored for RF trans- parency, ensuring seamless wireless communica- tion in smart metering systems. Water sensors and meters, especially those used in municipal, industrial, or smart infrastructure appli- cations, must comply with a range of industry stan- dards to ensure reliable long-term performance in wet and submerged conditions. Key standards and tests include: • ISO 20653 (IP67/IP68) or IEC 60529: Ingress protection verifying resistance to water, solid foreign objects, and dust • IEC 60068 Series: Includes temperature cycling, vibration, mechanical shock, salt mist, corrosion resistance, and humidity exposure tests • IEC 61000 Series: Requires testing for surge protection, electrostatic discharge (ESD) immunity, and electromagnetic interference (EMI) immunity, particularly important for wire- less devices 'Potting' the Path Ahead Smart devices and sensors are now embedded in nearly every sector, from transportation and util- ities to agriculture and consumer products, and their growth shows no signs of slowing.
