A tagline on its website declares, "AI and high- performance computing scale only as fast as power allows. … TeraWulf delivers the power and the infra- structure that make sustained growth possible." The company creates "mega" data centers by first finding available land with ready power and fiber connectivity, working with local and state govern- ments for permission and to complete strategies, and partnering with a company like Schneider Electric to bring it all together. TeraWulf, and the very few compatriots they have in this space, are building the data centers the world requires for the AI that we not only want, but expect in the coming decades. The Barker location of Lake Mariner was once the site of a coal power plant. Unlike many of the hyper- scalers that will eventually become users of the data center sites that TeraWulf is building, TeraWulf is not deterred by the environmental implications of site cleanups, which opens up location options that others might not see or find attractive. The Lake Mariner Data Center is one of five such projects TeraWulf currently has underway in the United States, in early stages of development. The others are in Lansing, New York; Hawesville, Kentucky; Charles County, Maryland; and an as-yet- unidentified location in Texas. The portfolio will amount to over 2 GW of power, roughly the output of 7% of New York State during a recent summer heat wave. The Lake Mariner campus will be the largest of the five sites at 750 MW once completed, and is the only one currently operational (with newer buildings still under construction). It is a stun- ning example of what a modern AI data center must be to adequately support AI high compute power and heat. The campus started with what is affectionately named the "WULF DEN," a more modest 2 MW proof-of-concept build that has provided the basis for the huge scale-up at Lake Mariner. The next scale jump was 10x for the completion a 20 MW capacity building, CB1. CB3 and CB4 are the largest of the buildings and are still under construction, the latter clocking in at 330,000 square feet and built to HOW MUCH POWER IS 750 MW? 750 MW is a tremendous amount of power, roughly equivalent to the elec- tricity demand of a mid-sized U.S. city, like Buffalo, New York. A 750 MW campus would rank among the largest AI-focused data center developments in North America. By comparison, a tradi- tional enterprise data center operates at less than 20 MW, while large hyperscale campuses often range from 100–300 MW. A 750 MW site can support multi- ple AI training clusters containing tens of thousands of GPUs, making it attractive to hyperscalers and AI platform provid- ers that require massive amounts of compute capacity.
