AUGUST 2026 I I-CONNECT007 MAGAZINE 49 WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE? Today, we all know "the cloud," but how is a neocloud company different, and what makes one a hyperscaler in data centers? Here are some simple definitions and a table of the current top hyperscalers. Hyperscaler: A company that owns and operates computing infrastructure at global scale, including massive data centers and networks. Cloud provider: A company that delivers computing services over the internet. Neocloud: A specialized cloud provider focused primarily on delivering high-perfor- mance AI computing, usually powered by NVIDIA GPU clusters. TeraWulf COO Sean Farrell spoke about the setup of the Lake Mariner campus. cant portion of the tremendous amount of AI investment we see is dedicated to infrastructure and to creating more neoclouds. Schneider execu- tives reported approximately 150 new neocloud companies founded over the last three years, with companies like NVIDIA helping to bring some of them to market. To say that my visit to Buffalo and tours of Schneider Electric's Motivair facility and TeraWulf's Lake Mariner AI data center expanded my understanding of the extraordinary infrastructure required to power the AI revolution is a gross understatement. Yet, while I have much more to learn, seeing the scale of a 750 MW AI data center firsthand gave me a new appreciation for the engineering, energy, and vision driving this transformation and the immense task in front of us to support AI as we expect it to develop and serve our needs. I am deeply grateful for the opportunity, remain humbled by the magni- tude of what lies ahead, and look forward to watching this part of the AI story continue unfolding.
