154 I-CONNECT007 I REAL TIME WITH... IPC APEX EXPO 2023 SHOW & TELL MAGAZINE he learned a lot about people whom he didn't often get the opportunity to interact with. One of Mitchell's favourite books is James Surowiecki's The Wisdom of Crowds, which promotes the idea that large groups of peo- ple are collectively smarter than individual experts. The book demonstrates this point through examples where diverse groups working on problems achieve better results than individuals working independently. To keep up with a fast-changing world, train- ing needs to be continual, otherwise an orga- nization risks losing good people. Training and skills development provide a pathway that allows individuals to know where they are going and the routes they can take to improve their position. Providing training gives people knowledge about how to prog- ress along their pathway; as things change and new developments evolve, ongoing upskilling is essential every step of the way. Mitchell's basic framework asks us to build new skills and habits to overcome the many workforce challenges to both finding and keeping people in today's labour market. Mitchell explores this topic further through many more examples in his new book, due to be published in June this year, It is titled Fire Your Hiring Habits: Building an Environment that Attracts Top Talent in Today's Workforce. All proceeds will benefit the IPC Education Foundation, which strives to build the work- force by bringing more people into the industry. S&T
