IPC APEX EXPO 2023 SHOW & TELL MAGAZINE I I-CONNECT007 53 This is basically the statistical approach now—doing SIR tests with a lot of material. For my paper, I ramped up the climate condi- tions so that they had a dynamic response. With all this current leakage, I was able to do data extraction and some regression analysis to find good equa- tions so that those things could be mathematically described. I'm hearing that this is an approach to predictive modeling. Yes, exactly. What we are doing now is one of the next steps. One approach is to use a humidity simulator tool. We are already capable of accessing weather data all over the world. The insight this gives us into the electronics is that we can now also assess risk. What does that mean? Well, for electronics, we can now implement everything in our vehicles with sensors and props installed inside the electronic control units. We can have a lifetime monitoring of the situ- ation, including what's going on inside as the humidity level rises, and as a post-processing process we can precisely visualize the risk to the electronics based on these models and mathematical equations. Design teams can use a reliable, predictive modeling method to essentially see into the future based on their design choices. They can figure out whether they have the reli- ability they want without having to spend 10 years doing reliability testing—which is the way we used to have to do it. What's the next step? I'm sure that this research will continue beyond this paper. The next step is when we can go up to 99% relative humidity, and then, of course, we have critical 100% relative humidity. If it starts to rain, what does that mean? Electron- ics use more cooling pipes wherever a lot of heat dissipation is needed. Nowadays, you must do active cooling, and this will be one of the next steps to handle this situ- ation; if we go beyond 100% humidity, we have tiny micro droplets—does that harm the electronics? That's more than statisti- cal modeling. You're actually starting to develop a physical model, the physics modeling for droplets, etc., shorting contact points, right? That will be really hard if it's really based on physical equations, because depending upon where you are, condensation looks different. It's really hard to give a clear prediction in mathematics. That will be computationally intense. Do you envision designers one day using an interac- tive software tool to get this information? We have already started working on that. What I've presented are a number of equa- tions; our program guys are now using Python to create a web-based application so our designers can use it in an early stage to check what it means for some variations.
