Harley-Davidson has ongoing efforts to make harnesses more space-efficient, ser- vice-friendly, and light- weight, with a move toward smaller, more robust connector fami- lies and efforts to reduce the size of wire bundles and breakouts. Brian says there is a constant push to find simpler, more cost-effective ways to build, install, and maintain these critical systems without com- promising performance or quality. There is a role for digital tools in product development, and while Harley-Davidson does use virtual design systems, the current tools are only directional and need improvement, Brian says, particularly in the accuracy of 3D models, design-for-assembly capabilities, and their ability to factor in real-world variables. "Wiring will never go away, so we must evolve and improve," he says.
