The slogan "Virginia is for Lovers" was created in 1969 by the advertising agency Martin & Woltz Inc. The idea was to promote Virginia as a destination with broad appeal, initially targeting history, beach, and mountain lovers. Eventually, the slogan was simplified to "Virginia is for Lovers" to encompass all these attractions and more.
