I have been working with
Nolan Johnson on a podcast
series about designing PCBs
for the reality of manufac-
turing. By sharing lessons
learned over a long career in
the PCB industry, we hope to
shorten learning curves and help designers produce
better boards with less hassle and rework. Episode 2
deals with the electronic pre-manufacturing process.
The Del Mar Electronics and Manufac-
turing Show (DMEMS) in Del Mar,
California, recently took place at
an unlikely venue: the Del Mar Fair-
grounds. The show covers everything
in electronics manufacturing: design
tools, components, base materials,
training, testing, board fabrication,
AI, data analytics, and more.
Materials used for the fab-
rication of multilayer PCBs
absorb high frequencies and
reduce edge rates. That loss
in the transmission line is a
major cause of signal degradation. However, not
all of us are designing cutting-edge boards and
sometimes we tend to over-specify requirements
that can lead to inflated production costs.
Ansys announced that at the
special meeting of stockholders
held earlier today, its stockholders
voted to approve the proposed
acquisition of Ansys by Synopsys,
Inc. Under the terms of the merger
agreement, Ansys stockholders
will receive $197.00 in cash and
0.3450 shares of Synopsys common stock for each
Ansys share they own, representing an enterprise value
of approximately $35 billion based on the closing price
of Synopsys common stock on December 21, 2023.

meetings, and the 16th Elec-
tronic Circuits World Conven-
tion. I really enjoyed walking
around and seeing everything
the show had to offer.
The world of PCB materials used
to be a fairly simple one. It was
divided into two groups: the "tra-
ditional" laminates, often called
FR-4, and the high-speed lami-
nates developed especially for
high-speed PCBs. These were two
worlds that usually didn't collide.
