IPC COMMUNITY 74 SPRING 2025 SUSTAINABILITY The electronics industry is facing a critical juncture. As con- sumer demand for sustainable products rises and regulatory pressures intensify, companies must prioritize the safety of their products and processes. This means not only complying with evolving chemical restrictions but also proactively seeking safer alternatives. This challenge presents an opportunity for the IPC community to unite and drive meaningful change. By fostering collaboration and leveraging collective knowledge, we can create a more sustainable and safer future for electronics manufacturing. The Rise of Chemical Hazard Data Chemical hazard assessments (CHAs) are one of the most promising tools in this endeavor. These CHAs provide com- prehensive information on the human and environmental hazards of individ- ual chemicals, enabling companies to make informed decisions about the materials they use. While CHAs don't replace the fundamental need for data collection, safety controls, or performance testing, they offer crit- ical insights to improve processes and reduce risks to meet the spe- cific needs of manufacturers using the chemical. An example of this approach is ChemFORWARD's Data Trust, a globally harmonized repository Future-proofing Electronics By Rachel Simon, Senior Manager, Safer Chemistry, ChemFORWARD ChemFORWARD works toward collaboration for safer chemistry Rachel Simon
